Illustrative 100 MW power-plant and data-center example

Sample Implementation

See how power for computing could also create fresh water for a nearby community or industry.

How it works

From electricity to fresh water.

Valora links power, computing, cooling and water treatment in one connected flow.

100 MW

Power plant

A combined-cycle power plant supplies electricity.

65% efficient plant
~90 MW

Computing

About 90 MW supports computing at a PUE target of 1.11.

More of the power reaches computing
Liquid loop

Capture the heat

Direct-to-chip liquid cooling captures heat from the computers.

A closed loop keeps the cooling liquid separate
~75 MW

Use the heat

Recovered heat supports MSTD thermal distillation.

Heat becomes part of the water-treatment job
Fresh water

Treat the water

Seawater or impaired water is treated to produce fresh water.

Salts and contaminants stay behind for managed treatment

Headline result

~5 million m3/yearfresh water could be produced
~13,700 m3/day~3.6 million US gallons/dayApproximately 2,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools of fresh water each year.

Why the power split matters

More computing. Heat with a job to do.

PUE compares total facility power with computing power. Closer to 1.0 means less power is used by cooling and other overhead.

Conventional example

PUE 1.18

About 85% supports computing. About 15% goes to utilities and cooling.

Valora target

PUE 1.11

About 90 MW supports computing, while about 75 MW of compute heat is recovered for water treatment.

What the example could change

Use heat. Save water. Avoid more fossil heat.

These values compare Valora with making the same water in a conventional thermal desalination plant that burns fossil fuel for heat.

~0.75

ERF

Energy Reuse Factor: the share of facility energy reused outside the data center.

~130,000

tonnes CO2/year

Could be avoided by not burning fossil fuel to make the same water in conventional thermal desalination. This is not CO2 removed from the data center.

Closed cooling loop

No cooling-tower water loss

Heat moves to the water process instead of evaporating water in a cooling tower.

Simple terms and model basis

The assumptions behind this example.

A short guide to the terms and values used in the illustration.

PUE

Total facility power divided by computing power. Closer to 1.0 means less overhead.

ERF

The share of facility energy reused outside the data center.

MSTD

Multi-stage thermal distillation: using heat to separate fresh water from salts and contaminants.

GOR 5

About five units of distilled water for each unit of steam supplied.

Power basis

100 MW; 65% efficient combined-cycle plant.

Stated plant emissions

About 250,000 tonnes CO2/year.
